When a person is willing to do anything no matter how vile, ridiculous, or damaging in order to impress someone else with how virtuous they are in order to curry favor and find purpose, that is narcissism on such a level it should be considered a mental illness.
I used to wonder what insanity took over the minds of so many supposedly well educated people in Germany before the second world war. To my horror, I no longer have to wonder, I just have to look out my window.
