Like other Americans, I’m depressed by the growing level of political partisanship. There seem to be a lot more people with extreme beliefs yelling at us. The ends of the belief spectrum are engorged, the center hollowed out.The extremism on almost entirely on the Left. It is difficult to find any Republican extremists.
Pundit Andrew Sullivan says that he is to the left of Barack Obama, but he is distressed at how extremist the mainstream Left has turned:
Or check out Kevin Drum’s analysis of asymmetric polarization these past few decades. He shows relentlessly that over the past few decades, it’s Democrats who have veered most decisively to the extremes on policy on cultural issues since the 1990s. Not Republicans. Democrats. ...There are so many examples of this that it should be obvious. I have posted dozens. We are going through the greatest radicalization of the elites since the 1960s. This isn’t coming from the ground up. It’s being imposed ruthlessly from above, marshaled with a fusillade of constant MSM propaganda, and its victims are often the poor and the black and the brown.
Here is today's NY Times article about supposed right-wing extremists:
Four years after a woman was killed and dozens were injured when white nationalists protested the planned removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Va., workers removed the statue on Saturday, along with a nearby monument to Stonewall Jackson, another Confederate general. ...Wanting to keep some old statues of some great men is not extreme. Tearing them down is.President Biden, who has said that Charlottesville inspired him to run for president, also welcomed the removal of the statues, according to a spokeswoman, Emilie Simons. “The President believes that monuments to Confederate leaders belong in museums, not in public places,” Ms. Simons said.

I can't think of any countries outside of America that tolerate the presence of monuments glorifying traitors.
France has lots of monuments about the French Revolution.
