The Southern Poverty Law Center strongly condemns the possible inclusion of an anti-gay, conversion therapy plank in the Republican Party platform that will be adopted at the party’s convention next week.It does sound bad to be putting hate in the platform, but here is what they are complaining about:
Modern science has entirely and thoroughly debunked conversion therapy – a term used to describe the discredited practices that purportedly can change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. ...
Anti-LGBT extremist groups embrace conversion therapy because it is premised on precisely the same lies that undergird their hate. Indeed, the person responsible for pushing the pro-conversion therapy plank is none other than Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, who has said that pedophilia “is a homosexual problem.”
Last week, we published an account of how hate and extremism has influenced the presidential campaign. This is just one more way.
We urge the GOP to reject the lies of anti-LGBT extremists like Tony Perkins.
Language: "We support the right of parents to determine the proper treatment or therapy, for their minor children."Really? I do not see any hate in that statement. Of course parents should make decisions for their minor kids.
Various psycho and medical organizations do denounce conversion therapy, with statements like this:
“Aversion therapy (a behavioral or medical intervention which pairs unwanted behavior, in this case, homosexual behavior, with unpleasant sensations or aversive consequences) is no longer recommended for gay men and lesbians. Through psychotherapy, gay men and lesbians can become comfortable with their sexual orientation and understand the societal response to it.” -American Medical AssociationOkay, but that is a political statement. They probably had gays on the committee, and believe that psychotherapy should be used to encourage homosexuality, but not heterosexuality.
A lot of psychotherapies do not work very well, and none of these statements say that conversion therapy is any worse than any other therapy.
Here is an amusing new article on The 1970s “gay-cure” experiments written out of scientific history. This research was done by a reputable scholar with some positive results, but nobody wants to talk about it anymore.
The Left was laws to undermine parents and the family, including making it illegal to encourage a child to be hetersexual. Those leftists like the SPLC are really sick.
I do not have any opinion about the effectiveness of any therapies, as that ought to be settled by scientific studies. However there are no scientific studies supporting the positions of the SPLC and other leftist-gay organizations. And even if there were such studies, they would not be strong enuf to override the wishes of the parents. In a free society, parents are allowed to make choices that possibly disagree with leftist do-gooders.
