Black leaders from around the nation are condemning Florida’s new education laws that further limit how Black history can be taught in schools. So what do the Democrats want? To teach that no slaves developed any skills? Here are Blacks complaining. The new guidelines require lessons on race be taught in an “objective” manner that does not seek to “indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view.”
One updated standard requires teachers to instruct on “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.” ...
Vice President Kamala Harris is headed to Florida on Friday to address the controversy, but on Thursday blasted Florida for pushing a “revisionist history.”

There are not two reasonable sides to the slavery question, no matter how many folks of a certain political bent say there are.
Okay idiots,
Meaning anyone that wants to race bait instead of knowing actual history, not the absurd Democratic party talking points...which is also pretty rich when coming from the political party that actually fought for the right to have slaves, for god's sake read up on who was who in the American Civil War. No, the parties did NOT switch sides magically via the 'The Southern Strategy'.
Slavery has been with humanity since the beginning of recorded time, there hasn't been a single human empire that ever existed that didn't employ it to their advantage. There hasn't been a single country that has existed for more than several centuries that hasn't used some form of slavery, meaning all of Europe, Asia, Africa, Central America, South America, and India. America itself was initially a working Penal Colony for profit (as was Australia) which employed the forced labor of people from all over England, Scotland, and Ireland, both Men and Women. Getting on your soap box and bitching about slavery of the past two hundred years when so many supposedly respectable people in the western world STILL have no problem buying cheap slave produced luxury goods (I'm looking at you NIKE and Apple etc.) produced by slaves in China, India, Africa, and even Italy is utterly laughable...if it wasn't so disgusting.
News Flash: People of the past had short brutal lives. The average male life expectancy from the time of the Roman Empire to the time of Colonial America was about 35 years, and that's with reasonable nutrition and access to medical care of the times, if you were on the low end of existence it was far shorter.
Black American slaves did often learn skills that they could use to have a trade or craft, as did almost everyone else in the North. Many in fact used such skills to support themselves. Thomas Jefferson himself had a large concern of what would happen to freed slaves if they had no trade with which to support themselves, as without one they would starve to death, and so he did have his servants taught skills with which they could one day rely upon when they were freed.
Learning a trade was usually how folks of any sex, race, or creed supported themselves back in day. Going to college was always a rich man's fancy until quite recently historically.
Yes, slavery has existed for a long time. Fortunately, slavery is not as common as it once was, particularly in Western societies like ours. That's because our thinking has progressed to the point where we view slavery as not conducive to our moral and thickly standards. Did any slaves gain skills that they could use after being freed? No doubt yes. Is the acquisition of such skills a reason to justify slavery or mitigate the harms it caused? No.
I acknowledge your belief that partisan political competition did not realign after the expansion of civil rights in the sixties but I don't think we can debate that one. 😉
MikeAdamson,
The only person of note who said that Florida was teaching kids that slavery was good, was Kamala Harris, She cherry picked once bullet point observation entirely out of context and did what she always does, made a huge mess of things, please for the love of god, watch her interview talking about electric school buses, she is ...something else. Several black historians have called her out on her blatant race baiting and inaccurate handling of the issue.
