Newsom is running for President in 2028, and he needs to lock down the Black vote.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a first-in-the-nation law that requires large companies to disclose if they or their predecessors profited from chattel slavery.
The Truth in Disclosure Act will require major companies operating in the state to disclose these historical and financial ties to enslavement-related transactions.
No one profited from slavery. Slavery was never legal in California.
An example of a type of company that would likely have to make such disclosures in California is JP Morgan Chase. According to the California Reparations Task Force report, in 2005, the banking giant wrote a formal apology because two banks that it had taken ownership of had taken 13,000 enslaved people as security for loans in Louisiana. When enslavers could not pay back the loans, the banks took ownership of 1,200 people. You could take ownership of a piece of property anywhere in the world, and it could have been once used for a slave transaction. This means nothing, and does not mean that JP Morgan Chase ever did anything wrong.

If you wish to shut these repatriation clowns up with a few simple arguments:
1.) Ask them if the Confederacy still exists. The Confederate government which supported the practice of slavery in North America ended in 1865. Not one American who was either a slave owner or a slave is alive today for a practice that ended in America over 161 years ago. There is no one left alive from that period to prosecute.
2.) The North never practiced slavery of African Americans, so well over half the population at the time lived where it wasn't legal. Were the people in the North responsible for the practice of slavery? How? America fought a civil war over the practice where roughly 750,000 people died over it. We have paid in blood dearly already.
3.) How are you going to get people who arrived in America after 1865 to get onboard with the idea they should be paying money to people who were never slaves? How are you going to stop each successive generation of black people from claiming they were hurt and demand similar repatriations from white people? This is just intergenerational blood guilt based on skin color.
4.) Murder is also a serious crime, can we also charge the families of murderers past or present for the crimes committed by those who actually murdered someone? Perpetually? Sounds like the middle east in practice, By this reasoning we will have everyone at each other's throats for eternity. Imagine if every successive generation of Americans could seek repatriations from Germany or Japan for WWII...or vice versa?
5.) Africans (who were black) were responsible for selling their countrymen into slavery in Africa. Are the lovers of repatriation going to take on the fact that they most likely share ancestry with these people? How about those still in Africa practicing the slave trade to this day?
As far as I am concerned, I really don't feel the slightest guilty over who enslaved who 161 years ago in America, any more than I get a twinge over the same practice in every single empire that ever existed on earth that we know of.
I would honestly say I am far more concerned with my country for continuing to do trade with nations that continue the practice of slavery TODAY, like say China, India, Saudi Arabia, a huge chunk of Africa, Pakistan, than people dead over a century and a half ago.
