Today is Cesar Chavez Day in California

It has been renamed:

California lawmakers voted Thursday to rename César Chavez Day as Farmworkers Day in an effort to reconcile the Latino labor icon's legacy with explosive sexual abuse allegations before the state holiday on March 31.

I listened to the NY Times podcast on this, and the accusations come from women who kept quiet for 50-60 years. Chavez has been dead for 30 years. The main accuser was angry that she had been kicked out of the Chavez organization for being a heroin addict, and for bringing heroin to others. There was no corroboration of any of the accusations.

I am not trying to defend Chavez. I am merely saying that there is no way to know what happened 50 years ago. We do not even have Chavez's side of the story. I tend to doubt heroin addicts, and those who wait until they cannot be contradicted. But believe what you want.

Canada Schools Teach Paganism

Physics professor Larry Krauss writes:

In the early 2000s, I spent much of my time over the course of several years fighting the incursion of religion into science classes in the United States. ...

We were very successful, culminating in a famous court case in Dover, Pennsylvania, where a local school board had tried to replace a high school science text with an intelligent design textbook. After testimony from numerous scientists, the judge wrote a remarkable 139-page judgement describing ID as religion, rather than science, and therefore not appropriate for discussion in high school science classes.

Actually the judge did not write it. The ACLU wrote it, and the judge rubber-stamped it. The decision relied on the Lemon Test, which has since been reversed by the US Supreme Court. The judgment no longer has value.

You may wonder how religious fundamentalism could so effectively creep into the curriculum in a progressive place like British Columbia. The answer is simple. The religious nonsense being inserted into the curriculum has nothing to do with Christian fundamentalism; rather, it is Indigenous religious nonsense. And in the current climate, Indigenous “knowledge” is held to a different standard from scientific knowledge — or, rather, to no standard at all.

The B.C. Curriculum resorts to a phrase that was utilised by the New Zealand government when they too distorted the high school science curriculum in that country by arguing that Indigenous “Ways of Knowing” should be taught alongside conventional science and treated as an equally valid way of understanding how the world works.

The Catholic Church and the other mainstream Christian churches teach regular science, and not the stuff he complains about.

UN Vote demands Slave Trade Reparations

AP reports:

The U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans “the gravest crime against humanity” and calling for reparations as “a concrete step towards remedying historical wrongs.” ...

The vote in the 193-member world body was 123-3, with 52 abstentions. Argentina, Israel and the United States were the three members voting against the resolution. The United Kingdom and all 27 members of the European Union were among those that abstained.

The USA Constitution did abolish the slave trade. So the slave trade was a crime in the 1800s. An amendment later abolished slavery itself.

The Africans were enslaved by other Africans, and sold to international slave traders. So maybe Africa should pay reparations.

But didn't the USA profit from the slave trade? No, it did not. The slave trade was an economic disaster for the USA. The USA would be much richer if it never happened.

And the USA has been paying trillions of dollars in reparations already. Collectively Black Americans get much more in government mandated benefits than the taxes they pay.

Academia cannot Tolerate linking Race and IQ

This is all taboo. Here is the logic. Some people are more intelligent than others. Intelligence is measured by IQ tests. All evolved human traits must be heritable. Numerous studies have shown IQ to be heritable. Heritable traits are very likely to have average differences over groups. Race is real and measurable. Self-identified race is nearly always the same as that identified by DNA tests. There are likely to be racial and sex differences in IQ, with a largely genetic origin.

This information could be used to justify discrimination.

Often this is addressed by attributing differences to culture or discrimination. If so, there could be some legal remedy. But those remedies have never worked.

So the response is to deny that race exists. Or deny that IQ exists. Or deny that human genetic differences exist. Or prohibit anyone from talking about the subject.

How to Label a Criminal Illegal Alien

Apparently newspapers have to be sensitive about how they describe killers.

The Loyola Phoenix, the student newspaper of Loyola University Chicago, has issued an editor’s note apologizing for an Instagram post calling the alleged killer of 18-year-old student Sheridan Gorman an "illegal immigrant."

"On March 23, a post on The Phoenix’s Instagram page carried the following headline: ‘Immigrant Man Charged in Murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS Involved,’" the editor’s note, posted below a Sunday article about Gorman’s murder, read.

"That headline didn’t reflect the most important elements in the story, and it was taken down minutes later to prevent any further harm to affected community members," the editor’s note continued.

"Additionally, in the body of the original post, we described the man who was charged as an ‘illegal immigrant,’ using language provided by the Department of Homeland Security," it went on. "That language does not align with Associated Press style, nor does it align with the values of this newspaper."

A Sunday press release from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called the alleged killer, identified as Jose Medina-Medina, a criminal illegal alien from Venezuela.

So the editor is lying about using DHS language, as it called him a criminal illegal alien.

I actually agree with avoiding the term "illegal immigrant". An immigrant is someone who comes to the USA on an immigrant visa, or is a naturalized citizen, or is in the process. Most of those called illegal immigrant entered the SUA illegally, or on some other visa. It would be better to call them illegal aliens, or deportable foreigners, or something like that.

Rich Lowry of National Review today posted Why is Tucker Carlson promoting a Christian heresy?

The supposed heresy is Marcionism, an ancient obscure dispute about what books should be included in the Bible. Marcion like Paul, but not the Old Testament.

It is amusing to see political attention to old theological disputes. Apparently National Review sees its mission as policing right-wingers, and stopping them from annoying the Jews.

Carlson has become anti-war, much to the annoyance of Pres. Trump and pro-Israel factions. But I do not see that he said anything supporting Marcionism.

Carlson is simply taking the mainstream Christian view that the Gospels supersede the Old Testament. He disagrees with those who say Christianity is subordinate to Judaism.

Covid-19 may have Started in California

There is still a lot of attention to the origin of covid-19, but one thing puzzles me. Everyone says it started in Wuhan China, and spread to California in late Jan. 2020. The Wikipedia article on Timeline of the COVID-19 pandemic in California says:

I asked an AI LLM why the authorities promote a Wuhan China origin theory, in spite of this evidence. It gave these arguments for the prevailing wisdom:

The China health authorities genome-sequenced the virus, while the California authorities did not.

The covid-19 antibodies were only found in 2% of the Jan. 2019 California samples, indicating it was not yet widespread.

The California samples were anonymized by the time they got to the Red Cross, so there was no followup on symptoms.

Many medical papers blame racoon dogs and other animals at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan China.

Studies in journals like Science, Cell, and Nature (including molecular clock analyses) consistently place the origin in Wuhan, with circulation undetected for at most ~1–2 months before the December cluster.

Nobody noticed excess hospital cases or deaths in California in Dec. 2019.

People were traveling out of China at the time, not into China.

I do not see how any of this rebuts a California origin theory. Yes, everyone wanted to blame that Wuhan animal market, but we now know that there was a conspiracy to cover up the possibility of a Wuhan Lab leak.

People were certainly traveling from California to China. Apple computer alone was sending dozens of managers back and forth everyday.

China was much better at responding to the epidemic than the USA. Yes, they did testing while the USA dithered.

I was in California at the time, and people certainly did notice the outbreak of an unusually bad flu-like virus.

All this does not prove covid-19 started in California. Maybe it started somewhere else, spread to California, and spread to Wuhan. There is some evidence of a Wuhan lab leak, and some are convinced by that. Maybe it started with a Wuhan lab leak in Oct. 2019, spread to California, and back to Wuhan. That would be consistent with the genomic papers.

But I think it does prove that the official timeline is wrong. Covid-19 was in California in 2019. It also proves that those who blame China for not responding faster to the epidemic are also wrong. China acted much more promptly than California.

The 2019 California outbreak was blamed on the flu. By Feb. 2020, nothing was blamed on the flu, and all flu-like symptoms were blamed on covid-19. The flu disappeared from official reports.

This makes no sense to me. Covid-19 was a flu-like virus. It could have been called the 2019 flu, but for political reasons. Some flu viruses are worse than others. Covid-19 was particular bad on elderly people with multiple comorbidities, like diabetes and obesity. We should have just called it the flu, and tried to protect the elderly.

There are a lot of covid-19 controversies that were never fully resolved. Did the virus come from pangolin/bat, or a lab leak. If a lab leak, was it accident or deliberate. And was the virus made worse by "gain of function" research. Why was all the advice so bad, regarding hand-washing, masks, social distancing, etc. Why were the schools shut down. Why was the vaccine info so bad. Why don't we have answers, six years later.

Besides all that, no one is even asking about the California outbreak. How is that the covid-19 was so serious that California closed the beaches, but the Dec. 2019 outbreak, whether it was covid-19 or something else, was completely ignored.

Senate Votes on Girls Sports being for Girls

The USA Senate just voted on this bill:

Section 901 of the Education Amendments of 1972 (20 U.S.C. 1681) is amended by adding at the end the following:

``(d)(1) It shall be a violation of subsection (a) for a recipient of Federal funds who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activities to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls.

``(2) For purposes of this subsection, sex shall be recognized based solely on a person's reproductive biology and genetics at birth.''.

All Republicans voted Yes, and all Democrats No, so it dies by a Democrat filibuster.

Apparently this defines our political divide more than anything else. For at least a century, there was universal agreement that girls sports were for females. Now it is down to Pres. Trump and his supporters.

People are allowed different views on the war, taxes, and other subjects. But politicians have to stick to the party line on this. Future historians will have a hard time explaining why anyone wanted boys to play girls sports.

The Silicon Valley AI Tyrants

Thus, nationalizing all these companies is the best possible choice. Better for AI to progress slower, as long as it remains under sane and reasonable leadership, instead of woke freaks in Silicon Valley.

Openai and Anthropic brag that their AI LLMs will soon have AGI, and they will essentially take over thw world and disrupt 100s of millions of jobs. And they must be trusted to do it safely and responsibly.

Employers, insurers, and data brokers have assembled behavioral profiles on most American adults that are already, in many cases, available for government purchase without a warrant. What does not yet exist is the AI layer that transforms this sprawling, fragmented data landscape into a unified, real-time surveillance apparatus. Today, these streams are siloed, inconsistent, and require significant human effort to connect. From our vantage point at frontier AI labs, we understand that an AI system used for mass surveillance could dissolve those silos, correlating face recognition data with location history, transaction records, social graphs, and behavioral patterns across hundreds of millions of people simultaneously.

The mere existence of such a capability in government hands — even if never activated against a specific individual — changes the character of public life in a democracy.

That is a description of the Google business model. It collects that data to use AI to make 100s of billions of dollars targeting ads, effectively selling mass surveilance data to marketers.

The Google brief complaint is not that such AI systems exist, but that they might end up on government hands. I am much more worried about what private companies are doing with such systems.

The brief also argues:

. A child’s tricycle can physically be driven on an interstate, but we do not allow it because of the risks of using the technology in that environment. Mass domestic surveillance and autonomous lethal weapons systems are the equivalently reckless domain for today’s frontier models. The considered judgment, shared widely across the AI development community, is that these applications of current AI technology carry risks so severe, and threaten harm so impossible to repair after the fact, that some kind of guardrails — whether contractual or technical — are necessary to constrain them in the absence of robust, genuinely effective governance frameworks.

The analogy to a child's tricycle is weird. A tricycle is not a dangerous technology, except that it gets in the way of other vehicles. I would expect an analogy about a toxic chemical truck on the highway, or something like that. No one worries about tricycles.

I do not think that there is any such consensus in the AI development community. They worry about AI LLMs taking over the world, or releasing dangerous info like bomb-making recipes, or tricking people into doing foolish things. They do not worry about military units doing their jobs more efficiently.

Openai and Anthropic are both planning to go public this year, with a combined market value of about a trillion dollars. And yet they run by lunatics with untenable business models. There has never been a situation before with so much at stake with such flaky companies.

The language of Astrology leads people to believe that if their sign was Aries, then Aries would be visible overhead on their birthday.

This is wrong for a couple of reasons. If Aries is your sign, then the Sun would be blocking that constellation on your birthday. So you would not see it because of the brightness of the Sun. It is also wrong because the Earth has shifted, and so the alignment of the stars, in the last 3000 years. Also, there are 13 signs of the Zodiac.

Criminals are Born That Way

It is common to attribute crime to poverty, absent fathers, or poor education. Someone will notice that a lot of prisoners were fatherless, and decude that huge social problems could be solved encouraging fathers or funding school programs. Maybe, but it does not follow.

The Blank Slate, the idea that differences in human personality and behaviour are entirely the result of that person’s experiences earlier in life, is utterly dominant in swathes of the social sciences, including sociology, criminology, and anthropology. Left-leaning academics adhere to the blank slate because it implies that humans are fully malleable. If a person’s behaviour, good or bad, is entirely the result of how they have been treated, then one can fix all of society’s problems by re-engineering society to give everyone an idyllic upbringing and so produce a utopia. Indeed, the failure to have done that already can only be attributed to the iniquity of the capitalists who thus need to be overthrown and deposed.

We’ve known for decades that this is utterly wrong. By far the biggest influence on a person’s personality and behavioural traits is their genes [1]. Twin studies, corroborated and supported by adoption studies and other types of study, tell us that about 50% of the variation in behavioural traits is attributable to differences in genes. Everything else – including biological randomness in embryonic development, the influences of families, schools and communities, and all the other influences and experiences specific to each person – only adds up to the other 50% [2].

The heritability of criminality is about 40–50%, which means that whether or not a child is likely to grow up to have a criminal record depends primarily on the genes he was born with, and less than that on his upbringing and childhood environment [3]. So why is this totally ignored in most discussions of the causes of crime?

Last month, a fatherless Canadian male transgender dropout shot and killed 6 in a school. It seems obvious that a deranged mom and a missing dad were major causes. Probably so. But we cannot know for sure in an individual case. We can research this by aggregated cases and measuring statistics. When that is done, the genetic causes are apparent, and the others are not.

European Civilizatoin required many Centuries

That is 100% true. High civilization requires order, and requires the pruning of the tree of civilization to achieve it

So it was a eugenics program that worked. Or maybe you will attribute the changes to Christianity, or legal institutions.

Regardless, it took many centuries to make the European and American people what they are today. There are no known shortcuts. It cannot be done with immigrants.

Texas Politician turns out to be a Nut

Democrat James Talarico just won a Texas primary against a radical Black woman, and the news media treats him as a moderate. He is not.

The NY Post reports:

“White skin gives me and every white American immunity from the virus,” Talarico’s full post read. “But we spread it wherever we go—through our words, our actions, and our systems. We don’t have to be showing symptoms—like a white hood or a Confederate flag—to be contagious.”

I do not know what this means.

The goofiest stuff is that he talks about religion a lot, and has weird beliefs.

Justifying the Iran War

Why are we at war with Iran? To end its nuclear program? To get its oil? To improve the human rights of its citizens? To stop Iran from exporting terrorism?

Unfortunately, the Trump administration has made statements implying that Israel started this war, and we have to be on its side.

There is another reason that people do not want to say. Iran was becoming a China puppet, and maybe this war is to limit China's allies and oil supply.

The NY Post has an op-ed:

Beijing’s slick sales pitches convinced the Iranians to spend their oil billions buying China’s military and telecommunications equipment — like the “state-of-the-art” radar systems that now lie in smoldering ruins after failing to detect the incoming American airstrikes.

But the decapitation of Iran’s leadership and the destruction of its Chinese-made defense arsenal aren’t the worst of Beijing’s Middle East woes.

It goes on to argue that China is the real long-term threat. We are afraid to fight China directly, so we have proxy wars.
